The Dutch early music scene is famous, and the funding poured into contemporary music by a — till recently — generous arts sector has seen a blossoming of new Dutch talent. But as the government is tightening its belt, so is the concert-going public, and those of us who love music have to be clever. Not to fear: there are many amazing opportunities to hear high-class music-making on a budget, or even for free. And when we have saved amazing amounts on several concerts, maybe we can treat ourselves occasionally to a big one — the big budget concerts need our love and support just as much as the emerging artists. In concerts which receive very little promotion except for within the Conservatorium van Amsterdam itself, the students and graduates perform all over the city in churches, chapels and some unexpected little musical hideaways. The same musicians who are performing for free, or for a nominal fee in tiny venues, are often at the same time releasing recordings, performing with professional orchestras and opera companies, touring other countries and winning international contests.
Many many thanks, dear Pamela! Oh a quite interesting interview. I will obviously come back to Ludlow. I hope to see you again!!! Did you play violin? I have forgotten Dear Rocio, Thanks for your kind words. I read your wonderful site with great interest. I hope we will meet in Ludlow one day. I was only singing there.
With my former collegues in the Pionier project I worked on the use of knowledge sources for Question Answering. I used to work on non-standard reasoning techniques in Description Logics, such as explanation or the support of debugging, and to develop logical criteria for modelling of ontologies or terminiologies. Now I am most interested in the relation between structure, usage and semantics of complex Knowledge Bases, such as the Web of Data. Very important is the music and previously, I sang with the Royal Metro Singers, a 7 person a cappella group, and ExMoor Singers, a London based chamber choir Sainsbury's Mixed Choir of the Year , in which I used to sing from 'til Nowadays I'm a tenor in the Lelikoor , an Amsterdam based mixed chamber choir of about 24 singers. Classical Knowledge Representation has no answer on how to give formal semantics to such complex systems, and on how to define which new knowledge should be automatically derived and which one not. Traditional accounts of the meaning of knowledge graphs are based on model-theoretic semantics.
Having bidden him farewell as Music Director in , the choir was delighted that JanJoost accepted the position of President, thereby maintaining our association. As a trained singer and choral conductor his busy schedule will now be focussed in the Netherlands singing, teaching and lecturing including conducting The Lelikoor of Amsterdam. JanJoost finished his studies in choral conducting in having studied with Barend Schuurman, one of the leading conducting teachers in Holland, at the Conservatory of Rotterdam. He is a teacher of ensemble technique and training, singing, theory and choral conducting, and teaches on a regular basis at the Dutch School of Arts.
